Vera May (née Flitney) 1932-2020

Written for Wycombe High School magazine (WHS Guild) by Mary Deaves (Vera’s daughter).

Born in nineteen-thirty-two In Princes Risb’rough mum grew Off she went to Wycombe High And, much later, so did I

To be a teacher her dream However, it did not seem That this was for her God’s will So that role she didn’t fill

She cooked for boys at Eton But was no Mrs Beeton So she changed her job, her trade And became house parlourmaid

Back in Risborough lived Fred And in due course they were wed Shortly after they did go Off to live in Great Marlow

Mum enjoyed being a mum Family life for her was fun Caring for all her children She was like a mother hen

Her faith to her was vital She learnt scripture, recital Believed in the power of prayer Even if life wasn’t fair

On her grandchildren doted All their achievements noted As she watched – waited to see What they would grow up to be

Then in March twenty-nineteen I was so extremely keen That we should help celebrate Their diamond wedding date

Friends and rels from far and wide Came to party by their side Mum so excited had been To get their card from the Queen!

Then last year the time did come To say goodbye to my mum But now she has found release From troubles, with God – at peace
