Herbie's Demise
Recently we went away In Stowmarket we did stay A friend came to feed the cat Nothing unusual ‘bout that
However, when we got back Signs of Herbie we did lack He did not appear that night Of him ‘twas no sound nor sight
We wondered, where he could be For we wanted him to see But e’en tho’ we called his name He never then to us came
So worries disturbed my sleep And thoughts did me awake keep Where on earth could he have gone Maybe there was something wrong?
Next morning he did return Where he’d been we’ll never learn And he was so very thin Barely more than bone and skin
Though he didn’t seem in pain He struggled life to maintain For he had lost all his strength Throughout his whole body length
But he still wanted to drink Which was a good thing, I think But he’d no desire to eat Even when we offered meat
He just needed down to lie Don’t think he wanted to die… It was truly sad to see How sick he had come to be
So we rang to try to get Urgent meeting with the vet Hopefully they soon would find The problem – give peace of mind
They took a good look at him And said that he must stay in For he needed special care That they could give to him there
First they tried to rehydrate But it seems it was too late Other things they did explore But soon they could do no more
His poor, weak and feeble frame That illness it overcame So it was he breathed his last His short life was in the past
It’s probably for the best That Herbie is now at rest But ‘twas a horrid surprise How fast he met his demise
