Noises

In the dark night The wind buffets my window I lie awake I cannot sleep

In the bedroom The cat wants my attention He wakens me He wants to eat

On the landing The clock hails the passing time It goes tick tock It has rhythm

In the garden The birds call to each other They make music They live simply

In the kitchen The freezer sounds hard at work It does annoy It does not stop

In the front room The radio is playing The DJ talks The words float out

In the meeting The people have much to say Do I listen? Do I join in?

In the silence The mobile phone starts to ring Someone calling Someone needs me

In the daylight The workmen drill in my road In my head an Insistent hum

On the main road The many cars blare their horns What are they for? What do they mean?

In the distance The train’s whistle gives warning It speeds along It is soon gone

In the Bible And throughout all of our life That’s where God is That’s where He speaks
