What is Flat?
What does it mean to say you’re flat? For that’s what the vet called our cat In the last days before he died We had to guess what it implied
Some days I’d say that I feel flat (But hopefully not like our cat) I think that what I tend to mean Is things aren’t how they could have been
Maybe for a dream I’m longing Or just want to sense belonging? If things have not quite gone my way I’d rather start a new, fresh day
You could be served up a flat drink One where they’ve let the bubbles sink In being flat it’s lost its fizz Like the runner who’s lost his whizz
Or flat can mean that something’s smooth No lumps or bumps, without a groove Flat can describe the land’s terrain Not hilly but more like a plain
A flat may be where you abide The type of home where you reside Or flat can be notes in a song When the musician pitches wrong
So when you next talk about flat Remember what I’ve said and that You need to ensure that you’re clear On what you mean to those who hear
