Cotswold Water Park

Cotswold Water Park - and its environs

Often when we go for a rideRiver Thames at Ashton Keynes We will head for the waterside At Cotswold Water Park – not far We can get there without a car

Beyond the small town of Cricklade We have many times our way made And also gone through South Cerney As we continue our journey

And there, what do you think we’ve found?View of Cotswold Water Park - lake near Ashton Keynes Massive holes dug out of the ground Not then filled with bricks and mortar But instead topped up with water

As we around them our trip make We will pass by many a lake Some with boats bobbing on the top Some giving birds a place to stop

At a lake you could well be taughtYachts on lake by Station Road, South Cerney How you can do a water sport The art of how to water ski Tho’ that’s def’nitely not for me

You may hear beyond the many trees Many boat masts blown in the breeze They sometimes get in a tangle As they jingle and they jangle

The source of the Thames is near hereWaterhay car park So the river depth is quite mere But after a rainy day It overflows, gets in the way

Yes, on days when it’s very wet Then you may find that we will get Flooded car park at Waterhay So you can’t see the parking bay

Right across and into the fieldFlooded field by Waterhay car park The tide rises, markings concealed Pastures home to many a cow Becomes more a paddling pool now

During lockdown ducks on the road And possibly a crossing toad In the fields reappeared deer As they then had much less to fear

We see horses being riddenSheep in field north of Ashton Keynes From footpaths they are forbidden Carefully we will overtake Trying no sudden noise to make

Out that way we may see some sheep Eating there or lying asleep Sometimes swans hide in the long grass But we may spy them as we pass

When we gaze up into the skyRed Kite Various birds we may espy Jay or finch, buzzard or red kite Or possibly an egret, white

Or overhead there could be planes If we are near to Ashton Keynes For Fairford is not so far away Where they utilise the runway

Near Cerney Wick’s a railway pathPlane over RAF Fairford When wet, it’s like taking a bath A train once crossed that countryside And would have made a pleasant ride

There are many bushes and trees Full of colours your eyes to please Especially the Autumn leaves When the farmer brings in his sheaves

On Saturdays there’s the ‘club run’Autumnal view of Station Road, South Cerney But we just go out for the fun And when we’ve been around the lakes We’ll make sure we find some nice cakes!
